INSTINCT AND CONSCIENCE –  DETAILED ANALYSIS AND DIFFERENCES! CAN WE TRUST THEIR INSTRUCTIONS?

Actual Question:    Instinct. is it believable.  can v trust it?

REPLY:

When I explain instinct, I have to explain conscience also.  CONSCIENCE AND INSTINCT are similar in indicating us to do or not to do something, but, at the same time different in an aspect.

How?

In general, INSTINCT reminds us something from our SUBCONSCIOUS MIND, whereas, CONSCIENCE reminds us something from our CONSCIOUS MIND.

Instinct means the actions that happen naturally, without any plans and without even thinking about it.   It may be the pre-recorded directions inside every person or animal naturally.

Therefore, Instinct can be genetic that is present as a behavior based on our inherited patterns.

We can compare both the Instinct and Conscience with the dreams.

In dreams, you see two types of scenes:

(1) The incidents, persons or scenes that you have seen already;

(2) New incidents, persons and scenes that are totally new to you.  You can even see a unseen heaven in your dream.  You can marry an actor, you can meet God in person, or, you can kick someone in your dream.

This shows if the dreams originate from our conscious mind, we see known incidents, persons or scenes in dream.

If the dreams originate from sub conscious mind, we see unknown  incidents, persons or scenes in dream.

Same applies in Instinct and Conscience.

INSTINCT comes  from our SUBCONSCIOUS MIND, and CONSCIENCE comes  from our CONSCIOUS MIND.

Let us go more in detail:

Conscience is the outcome or direction from the mind based on the learnings and experience of a person.  When a person knows which is dharma and which is not, his conscience is saved in his mind using the knowledge of dharma.  When we violate dharma at any time, this conscience reminds us what is dharma to help us avoid violating the dharma.

Whereas, Instinct does not require any previous learning or experience to get the knowledge to remind us something at appropriate times.   Instinct some times tells us to do something;  some times it tells us not to do something.  But,  this direction does not come from any recordings in the mind based on our experience.

Some times instinct instructs something to us even in the matters in which we have no experience.

For example, if our friend tells us to take his vehicle, our a voice from our mind tells us not to accept.

This voice is conscience. Why?  Because, we have some experiences with that friend and hence we know how he will react in certain situations. Eg: He will behave cheaply if we miss that vehicle.

That is why, we say NO to his offer accepting the voice of our conscience.

Thus, conscience is constructed by our experience and learning.

Another example is the instruction that our mind gives when we like to cheat a good person.  Since our mind knows all the supports that person has given to us and all, it reminds us that cheating such a good person is not good.  This is conscience based on our past experience.

Now let us see the examples for instinct:

If you run seeing a snake, it is instinct because you do not have any previous experience in getting bitten by snake.

Babies cry by instinct. No one taught them to cry.

When the baby takes birth, it successfully sucks milk from the mother’s breasts.  Who taught it how to suck milk?

Ducks follow their mother by instinct.

Ants follow each other in series with discipline.  This is instinct.

Seeing the above examples for instinct, we can observe that instinct is something to do with genes.  That is why every specie/ living being has a pattern of living.  Instinct is also a part of such inheritance.

SHOULD WE BELIEVE INSTINCT AND CONSCIENCE?

They need not be true always.

Since conscience is based on our past experiences, if we have more bad experiences, our conscious may also be dominated with bad theories.

Therefore, we can rely on conscience to some extent of a good person says what his conscience says.

However, it can even be wrong if he had wrong experiences.

For example, if I am cheated by many spiritual personalities, my conscience will record that the spiritual personalities will be risky.  Therefore, I will always hesitate to go to a spiritual personality.

As far as Instinct is concerned, it is not a conclusive indication.  If the instinct that comes through genes is to be believed, then, we can not make trials with any new inventions and discoveries.

For example, if the ants are to be allowed to learn even to walk in a non linear pattern.  This is not possible if they follow instinct only.

CONCLUSION:

Therefore, instinct and conscience may be some indications.  They can be considered for further evaluation, but, not for immediate conclusion.

Hope this has cleared your doubts.
