A-Z PRACTICALLY FEASIBLE TIPS FOR 100% RESULTS!” and the previous article on this topic as given in link below, must be read also by the wife and children of the smoker if a bachelor, by the parents, brothers and sisters of the smoker, because it has the message for them also!)
Before reading this article, read our previous article “WHY SHOULD WE QUIT SMOKING? A-Z SCIENTIFIC, MEDICAL, CULTURAL AND PRACTICAL REASONS!” to come to a decision to quit the habit of smoking.
That article has explained all the reasons in all angles to decide not to continue smoking. First read that article and then read this article for better results.
I hope that you should have taken a decision to stop smoking. Now, it is the time to know how.
This is not going to be a generalized article with advices similar to the ones given by grandparents in our families. Being a counsellor who have dealt with many such persons, I am giving effective tips to stop smoking.
Read this write up sincerely evaluating yourself within mind. OK?
First, WHY DO YOU SMOKE? IDENTIFY THE REASONS:
Do you know, most of the smokers are smoking even without knowing why they are smoking. They are habitually smoking at the fixed times every day. They are aware that they are losing money on the nasty smelling fumes and losing their schedules and image. Still, they take a cigarette and fire it.
Let us analyse who smoke:
(i) Many of the smokers started smoking accidentally or just as a hobby with friends or relatives. Their intention was not to keep it as a habit, but, they just touched it. Then, another one; then another one; Then continued and got habitual.
(ii) Another section of smokers started smoking with the wrong perception of forgetting their pressing problems. It later controlled them. Their problems are also continuing. Smoking added as another problem for them.
(iii) Another section started to satisfy their ego when someone betrayed them. They felt some kind of false satisfaction to forget the betrayal. Then it became a habit.
(iv) Another section started because of their weakness in self control and lack of principles when their friends or relatives called them to smoke a single cigarette.
(v) Another section wanted to show their heroism like in movies and hence started smoking.
Here, we have to note an important point: MANY SMOKERS HAD A FEEL OF EMPTINESS IN THEIR LIFE. So As to fill that gap, they started smoking. But, the smoking controlled them and they are now struggling with emptiness as well as additional burden and expense of smoking.
A survey states that most of the smokers like to quit the smoking. But, they fail in it again and again, or do not even start to quit.
Many fix dates to quit. Of course, they quit for a day. But, they get serious EMPTY or disappointed feeling and hence they again start to smoke.
“Let me smoke just a single cigarette now. I will restart quitting from tomorrow.”
Thus, they fix new schedules again and again and fail in it.
In my survey with the smokers, I have observed a common characteristic among them. I hope that they will agree with me. Many of the smokers
(i) had lower levels of self esteem/ self confidence;
(ii) had a nature of accusing the surroundings for their problems;
(iii) had a feel that the world does not care them and the entire situation is against them;
(iv) HAD AN EXPECTATION THAT SOMEONE SHOULD HELP THEM TO COME UP IN LIFE.
(v) had no sufficient GRIP or HOLD in their personal life to appreciate and encourage them.
This is not a big technical word. Many claim that they are suffering with withdrawal symptoms such as
(i) craving for nicodine,
(ii) head ache & constipation.
(iv) a feel of having lost something in life,
(vi) inability to perform scheduled works, etc.
From all the above points, we can come to a conclusion that Quitting smoking needs a collective effort by including many factors that we will discuss here. Most of the INDIVIDUL EFFORTS end in failure.
First, ARE THEY REALLY SYMPTOMS OF WITHDRAWAL?
Yes and No – both are right. “Yes” if you have no alternate engagements; “No” if you have alternative engagements.
Let us now discuss why I said both yes and no.
Most of the smokers truly wish to quit it. They take a sincere decision also. There is no doubt in it. But, when they quit, they find their earlier problems are still continuing; the emptiness is still there. The people who betrayed them are still there. They again feel that they have no hold in life. Therefore, they again take the false hold of smoking.
Therefore, the symptoms of withdrawal ARE NOT THE ACTUAL SYMPTOMS, BUT, JUST THE OUTCOME OF LOSING A KIND OF “FALSE HOLD” ENJOYED DURING THE DAYS OF SMOKING, HAVING NO OTHER HOLD WITH THEM. If the smokers think of this in a balanced mind, they will agree with this.
That is why, I told above that the withdrawal symptoms are true if they have no other hold OF ALTERNATIVE ENGAGEMENTS, and, not true if they have suitable alternative engagements.
Now, it will be nice if we discuss the quitting process.
THEN, HOW TO QUIT SMOKING?
(1) FIRST, BE AWARE OF THE “ILL EFFECTS” OF SMOKING:
Yes, unless you are convinced that smoking is an unwanted and unhealthy habit and its serious consequences, you can not put sincere efforts in quitting smoking. Therefore, you must know the real face of tobacco smoking and chewing by reading this previous article:
“WHY SHOULD WE QUIT SMOKING? A-Z SCIENTIFIC, MEDICAL, CULTURAL AND PRACTICAL REASONS!”
Once you are convinced with the points mentioned there, EVALUATE THE FOLLOWING POINTS by sitting alone in a place.
(i) Think, how many schedules you have lost, how much money you have lost and how much of health you have lost.
(ii) Think, when there are many non smokers who are living a happy life without getting conditioned by such unwanted habits, why you have joined the group of smokers.
(iii) Think, what are the things that you have gained so far in life because of smoking. You can not find even a single point.
(iv) Think, whether you should continue this unwanted and unhealthy habit.
(v) Ask yourself whether you should live under the strong control of an unhealthy product that has not even a single good benefits.
(vi) Think, whether you should remain under the control of a lion (cigarette) to escape from tigers (negatives in life), and add another negative in life.
(vii) Think, whether your children and wife should suffer if you die earlier with the diseases caused by the tobacco products.
Read that article again and again. Be convinced with the points given there. Now, take a strong decision like this:
“I will quit smoking from tomorrow. I will have my last cigarette tomorrow”
Why tomorrow? Wait, wait. Before smoking your last cigarette, you should make certain arrangements. Hence the time till tomorrow.
Make these arrangements:
(2) HAVE A TEMPORARY ALTERNATIVE ATTACHMENT:
What is this? We should desert attachments in life, but, you are telling us to arrange an alternative attachment before quitting smoking.
Yes, it is required atleast for two months.
If you see every person, he is leading his life with a strong hold on something.
Many persons spend his moments having attachment with wife.
Some persons spend his moments having attachment with friends.
Some persons spend his moments having attachment with television.
Some persons spend his moments having attachment with reading or social media.
Some persons spend his moments having attachment with touring everywhere.
Thus, if they receive sufficient satisfaction with any of the above attachments, they usually do not think of any other needs to satisfy them.
Therefore, BEFORE QUITTING THE SMOKING, YOU SHOULD KEEP AN ALTERNATIVE ATTACHMENT READY. IF YOU HAVE SUCH AN ALTERNATIVE ATTACHMENT, YOU WILL NOT HAVE THE DISTURBANCE OF NICODINE WITHDRAWAL SYMTOMS. OTHERWISE, ALL YOUR EFFORTS WILL FAIL.
REMEMBER! THIS ARRANGEMENT IS VERY VERY IMPORTANT. DO NOT BE CASUAL IN THIS.
What kind of alternative attachment can be made ready by you?
(i) If you have a cooperating wife, decide to spend most of the time with your wife for atleast 60 days and speak to her lovefully and have sex with her almost on daily basis for 60 days. Tell her that you are stopping smoking and hence she should cooperate with you by showing abundant love in words and actions atleast for 60 days that will give you sufficient engagement to avoid seeking the refuge of cigarettes again.
Spend all the time with wife and children. Take your wife and children to outings, even to the outstations.
See a new world of love with your family. When you develop more care on your family members, this will help you avoid the longing for cigarettes.
TIPS TO THE WIFE & CHLDREN (Please show them to read this article):
When your husband/ dad declares that he is going to quit smoking and spend time with them to forget the longing for cigarettes, please show abundant love to him without allowing him to think of nasty things. Cook good recipes every day and make him enjoy the food. Use sweet words to him. Forgive his excesses and do not care that, but, do not reduce your love and care. If you allow a gap for even a few hours, he may go back to smoking. You go to the shops to purchase things and let him be in home. Throw the lighter away and do not allow any remaining cigarettes in home. If he remains like that for atleast 45 days or two months, he will be free from withdrawal effects and he will permanently forget cigarettes.
(3) INVOLVE IN INTERESTING ASSIGNMENTS MOST OF THE TIME:
This is also very important. Idle mind is devil’s workshop. If you quit smoking, but, are remaining free, or doing uninteresting jobs/ assignments, you may feel empty or boring and hence you may again think of smoking again. Therefore, before starting to quit, keep an interesting assignment ready to do atleast for two months. It may be gardening, cleaning the home, selling/ throwing unwanted things in home, going to shop with family and purchasing dress and utensils for family, whitewashing the house, etc.
If you are interested in movies, get the CDs of good movies and watch them with the family. Just go to your job and come back home and do not have any other external assignments alone. Go to any place with the family members only for two months. Thus, after finishing job, perform these assignments and small works to pooh-pooh smoking sensation.
Read the newspapers and forget the cigarette for half an hour. Read good books. Watch TV programmes with the family. Take cool bath twice daily and feel fresh.
(4) BEFRIEND NON SMOKERS ONLY AND BE AWAY FROM NON COOPERATING SMOKERS:
You can not apply leave for work for two months. Therefore, go to job, do the works and come back. Kindly tell your smoking friends that you have stopped smoking and hence allow you to avoid giving company for smoking and not to compel you to smoke. If they cooperate, thank them. If they do not cooperate, cut their friendship. Develop friendship with only those who do not smoke and spend more time with them.
(5) KEEP ALTERNATIVE CONSUMABLES ALWAYS WITH YOU:
Whenever you see others smoke in office or travel, do not watch them and see the other side. If you get tempted seeing others smoking, TRY TO POOH-POOH THE SAME. If you find it impossible, take a delicious sweet from your hand bag and enjoy it. Or, take some chips and have it. Or, if you have the access to coffee, have a cup of coffee. Take a coffee flavoured chocolate and taste it. Using coffee more temporarily to forget the serious addiction to smoke is alright for these two months. I will write on this matter at the end.
(6) NICODINE REPLACEMENT THERAPY – NEEDED OR NOT?
IF YOU HAVE A STRONG DETERMINATION, these nicodine replacement therapis are not necessary. Why? Because, if you consume nicodine chewing gums, you will become addicted to that gum. Thus, you will be consuming nicodine continuously. Therefore, I have suggested sincere engagements above. If you follow them, you will definitely forget smoking.
Another important thing to note is: The smokers smoke because they like THE ACT OF INHALING AND SENDING OUT THE SMOKE. THIS ACT GIVES THEM A KIND OF SATISFACTION. Chewing can not exactly compensate the emptiness caused by the stoppage of smoking form of tobacco intake.
I have seen a guy who stopped smoking and used nicodine gums. Of course, he stopped smoking. But, now, he is addicted to gum and he is unable to quit it. Then, I advised him to replace nicodine gum with an ordinary sweet gum. He tried that with difficulty and finally quit the nicodine gum also.
Of course, these nicodine gums may give you some kind of satisfaction that you are with nicodine and hence you may avoid nervousness. However, any issue starts from your mind. If you keep your mind and body always engaged in interesting assignments, you may not need such nicidine replacement therapies.
However, if you have a strong determination that you will quit gum also, follow the schedule given in the nicodine gum box. Gradually reduce the gum intake and finally stop it totally. Some smokers use nicodine pads around their waist. This is also not compulsory if you engage in interesting assignments.
Therefore, instead of looking for nicodine alternatives, be prepared with alternative assignments that you like much as explained above. This will be good and make you participate in some assignments also.
(7) DEVELOP YOUR TALENTS AND EXTRA CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES:
If you analyse yourself, you may have some talents. If you can write stories, you can write and send to media. If you draw well, you can draw pictures and sell in internet or send to media. If you can make handicrafts, you can do that. If you can do computer programming, you can do that and sell them. You can start a side business and engage yourself in that. If you can teach well, you can teach the neighbour children and spend time with children. Such interesting engagements will help you to forget smoking sensation.
WHEN YOU SPEND MORE TIME IN THE REAL WORLD OF OPPORTUNITIES, YOU WILL NOT THINK OF ARTIFICIAL WORLD IN WHICH THE PEOPLE SMOKE, DRINK, PLAY CARDS, ETC.
(8) DECLARE AND SHOW YOURSELF AS A CLEAN GUY TO OTHERS:
Declare to your friends, family and relatives that you have quit smoking. This will give you a guilty feel whenever you try to smoke because you have bound yourself by declaring to all that you have quit smoking and if you smoke again, you will be considered as a bluff or weak person or a pretender. Though it seems like a SHOW initially, you will have to be very careful to maintain that SHOW. Therefore, you will hesitate to touch cigarette again caring your clean image.
Show yourself as a good guy to others. Then you will be forced to be good atleast to prove that you are a clean guy without unwanted habits. This show is for your good. Now you are SHOWING. One day in near future you will actually become good. This is also one of the good efforts to stop smoking.
(9) INVOLVE YOUR MIND AND SOUL IN SERIOUS DEVOTIONAL PRACTICES:
This is an important point and a proven process to quit smoking. I have seen hundreds of people who quit smoking by this process.
Do you know this important saying?
“When we experience a higher taste, we will lose our interest in lower taste.”
This is absolutely true.
A few examples:
(i) if you start to eat in star hotels, in due course of time, you will lose interest in eating in small or roadside hotels.
(ii) If you start to use Air conditioners, you will lose interest in using fans.
(iii) If you start to use your own car, you will lose interest in travelling by bus.
(iv) If you get a new big problem, your previous problems will lose their severity.
Similarly, IF WE DEVELOP OUR ATTACHMENT WITH THE GOD, WE WILL LOSE OUR INTEREST IN HAVING ATTACHMENT WITH THE NASTY SMELLING CIGARETTE AND OTHER MUNDANE THINGS.
Though this website and this article is meant for the followers of all paths/ religions, being the Krishna devotee, I like to give a familiar example: ISKCON (International society for Krishna Consciousness) was established by A.C.Bakthi Vedanta Swami Srila Prabhupada. Before starting it, he was staying in the rooms of drug addicts, smokers drinkers, etc because of the lack of sufficient money. Gradually, he taught about Krishna, devotional way of life, disciplined life, etc, to them. On seeing the devotional status of Srila Prabhupada, those addicts got reformed and became good devotees of Lord Krishna. They quit smoking, drinking, drugs, etc. Since they enjoyed the higher taste of devotion to Krishna that feeds the soul, they lost their interest in lower tastes like smoking, drinking, etc that feeds toxic chemicals to the body.
I PROMISE YOU, IF YOU EMBRACE THE DEVOTION TO GOD THAT IS THE HIGHER TASTE, YOU WILL NOT FEEL DIFFICULTY IN QUITTING SMOKING.
Therefore, after deciding to quit smoking, start to visit the temples everyday from today itself, spend more time there for atleast 2 months, be with the devotees and observe their dedicated service to God. You too take part in such services. Read the books on God. Develop interest in worshipping and serving Lord. Get more association of devotees. Follow the sadhanas (way of practice) as recommended by the temple. For example, Krishna devotees spend atleast two hours every day in chanting the Names of Krishna. This feeds the soul targeting Krishna. This higher taste, makes them uninterested in time and body killing smoking. This will make you even forget the habit of smoking.
(10) DO NOT GO TO THE SHOPS SELLING CIGARETTES FOR TWO MONTHS:
Yes, stop going to the shops where cigarettes are sold and smokers assemble to smoke, even for genuine purchase of family requirements. Buy things from the shop where they do not sell cigarettes. This will avoid getting tempted seeing others buying cigarettes.
(11) FEEL AND ENJOY THE BRISKNESS IN YOUR BODY AND NERVES AFTER YOU QUIT SMOKING:
It is the fact that you always felt a kind of tiredness in the body because your smoking had made your nerves weak. You had less potency in sexual relations that had made your wife confusing. You found it difficult to lift heavy materials. You become lazy also.
Now, you have quit smoking for the past few days. Just evaluate yourself now. How brisk your body is now! You have regained the briskness that you had in your twenties. You are now very effective in work, punctual, clear in speech and activities and you are now oriented towards higher tastes only and there will be no silly activities with you hereafter.
Now a days, your children come very close to you and love you much. They will not feel the bad odour when they kiss you. Even your wife will become free from bad odour while coming close to you. She will feel proud that her husband is not a smoker now. He is fully under the control of their love, not under the control of cigarettes.
Wow a new person has born now. He is not controlled by cigarette now.
How wonderful feeling this will be! Feel this the next day you quit smoking.
(12) BE VERY FIRM IN THE FIRST 3 DAYS AFTER QUITTING SMOKING:
Yes. After quitting smoking, if you do not involve in any alternative assignments, you will be disturbed much in the first three days. Because, you were touching a cigarette every half an hour or more. Now, your body clock will force you to take the cigarette. You should not even care the body clocks. You should make yourself very very busy in the first three days after quitting smoking. From the fourth day, you will gain a confidence that you can remain without cigarettes for ever. Maintain that spirit. Continue your being busy for the next two months.
From the 61 st day, you would have totally relieved from the addiction of smoking.
Even after 2 months, continue friendships with non smokers and devotees only. Talk to smokers just formally or professionally and do not involve in deep bond with the smokers because, seeing them, you too may be dragged again into smoking.
Though you can go to all shops after two monyths, so as to avoid any fall down, better be away from the shops who sell cigarettes atleast to much extent.
(13) SAY GOOD BYE TO THE ALTERNATE ATTACHMENTS ALSO, AFTER 3-4 MONTHS:
I had advised above to have an alternate attachment with someone or something when you stop smoking. I had advised to take coffee, watch television, watch movies, etc.
As far as high thinkers are concerned, the above alternate attachments are not adviseable in the long run. I had advised to take those products JUST TO GET RID OF THE MOST SERIOUS ADDICTION OF SMOKING AND TO AVOID FELING EMPTY AFTER QUITTING SMOKING. Compared WITH SMOKING, TAKING COFFEE, WATCHING FILMS, ETC ARE NOT THAT MUCCH BAD TO HEALTH.
However, as coffee, tea etc are also additive, once you successfully quit smoking, from the third or fourth month, stop coffee, movies also. Why should we continue unnecessary products?
In case, you need more days to quit these alternate attachments, take more time till you completely forget and hate smoking. In my opinion, attachment to smoking is dangerous compared to attachment to coffee.
If you like to advance well in devotion, you will have to stop intoxicants like coffee, tea, etc also. Just keep it in mind.
(14) PROBLEMS ARE THE PARTS OF LIFE FOR ALL. DON’T LOSE HOPE:
In case you had started smoking because of family problems such as non cooperating wife, children, relatives, etc, you can not get alternate attachment of the love of wife and children. You need not lose your hope in such cases. Develop your attachment with God. If your wife and children do not cooperate with you, do not lose your hope. Lord will embrace you and elevate you if you sacrifice unwanted attachments like smoking, drinking, etc to be an ideal devotee of Lord.
My point is: If your family loves you, you can develop that family love as well as Lord’s love as alternate attachments while quitting smoking. If not, just have lord alone with you as an attachment while detaching from smoking.
Since God’s love is that of higher platform, the lower taste smoking will definitely be forgotten when you develop love on Lord.
(15) SET THE QUIT DATE AS TOMMORROW AND ANALYSE YOUR LAST EXPERIENCE OIF SMOKING:
Yes, do not fix a distant date to quit smoking. Let that be TOMMORROW. Today is your last cigarette. If you postpone for a distant date to quit, you may lose this quitting spirit before that day comes.
Take your last cigarette. Fire it and inhale your first smoke of last cigarette. While inhaling, analyse the smell and taste. Think: “Oh, my lord, what an alarming smell and taste! Was I smoking this nasty smoke for this much of years? How foolish I have been! I lost savings, good friends, schedules, profits, closeness of wife and children, just because of this nasty smelling and ugly tasting cigarette! I have been very foolish.”
Then, inhale the second smoke of the last cigarette. Feel the pungent feeling it gives and feel the attack of the smoke on your throat. Feel that the smoke dries up your mouth and throat. Feel that you are inhaling more than 7000 toxic chemicals by paying money. Feel that you are inhaling cancer agents at your own cost.
Thus, while inhaling your last smoke of the last cigarette, Tell yourself:
“Oh, nasty smelling and ugly tasting cigarette! You had kept me under your control by exhausting my savings in the form of smoke. I purchased you paying my hard earned money. I may have to spend lakhs of rupees/ dollars to treat myself if I get any major diseases. You gave me nothing good. From this moment, I am deserting you. Hereafter, I will start a Recurring deposit account in my bank. I was spending Rs.4500 every month for you. I will stop buying you and deposit Rs.4500 in that account every month. In ten years, I will earn more than Rs.10 lakhs; In 30 years, I will be earning more than Rs. 50 lakhs including interest. This will be very useful for my wife and children after my demise. I am leaving you permanently. Hereafter I will not touch you and thanks for the good souls who taught me this lesson. Hereafter, I will live for my Family, God, and country. As a human, I have been given sufficient knowledge to choose which are the things I should follow and which I should not follow. I did not use that special knowledge meant for humans so far. Hereafter, I will sue that knowledge and desert unwanted habits that control me from now. All the best beautiful looking, but nasty smelling cigarette.”
Throw that last piece of burnt cigarette; Throw the lighter; Throw the ash tray;
Buy a Hundi and keep at your work table at home. Put Rs.150 into the hundi every morning before you go to the duty. On the last day of every month, open that hundi, collect that Rs.4500 available inside it and go to the bank or ATM machine and deposit that Rs.4500 in to your new Recurring deposit account.
How beautiful this life is without smoking!
Continue associating more with the devotees, your family members and non smoker friends, to continue your life without the feel of emptiness or negativities.
Follow all the 15 tips this article has provided above collectively at the same time. They are very easy to follow and practically feasible.
