How to control our senses?
A male follower(Name hidden) : My question: I am always addicted to sensory organs and mind? can you suggest any teaching Which can be my eye opener. (You can use pic and name while you wish answer my question through post) Thank you.
(I) KNOW HOW THE BODY IS DISTURBED – THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BODY AND ATHMA
Senses are body oriented. There are two ways to check the inducement by senses. (i) Only these senses see or observe the material objects and send the information to the mind. Eyes, ears, nose, tongue, etc observe the objects and send the observation to mind. The mind considers using those objects. (ii) Then, mind sends this to Buddhi (Intelligence). (iii) Buddhi advices or regulates whether that sense object is good for athma (you) or not. (iv) Your ahankar (ego) induces you to use that sense object. Therefore, you use that object and get conditioned (bound with the material affairs more and more).
The athma (soul) is above these senses. If you do not use these sense objects for sense gratification, athma remains un-conditioned. But when the athma takes the body it can not remain unconditioned because the body will always be engaging in some kind of fruitive activities that makes the athm conditioned. Here, conditioned or contamination means, athma is screened by these material dusts – like, a clear mirror is screened by the dust.
Why material is called dust? Because, the ‘material’ is opposite to ‘spiritual’. Athma is spiritual. Eternal . Pure. This means athma can not be directly contaminated, can not be cut, soaked, burnt, etc, etc.
At the same time materials are materials as their name show. They have an end and hence not eternal. Impure because, materials give us attachments with them. This attachment prevents us from remaining situated in athma, that means pure state.
Until athma, ie, soul does not take bodies, it is pure. When athma takes bodies the senses start to observe and bring the materials to enjoy. Then the not caring the sense objects and not getting addicted to them, you remain blissful.
For example, (i) when you see a girl (sense object – just for understanding. Girl is not an object), your eyes (sense) send this information to mind. (ii) Mind encourages your senses to approach that girl. (iii) Your Buddhi (intelligence) evaluates the mind’s desire to have relations with that girl and advices your mind to evaluate pros and cons of doing so. (iv) If your mind hears it, it can escape from sinning. If your mind does not hear the indication of Buddhi, but, starts to force that girl for relations, all the problems start. The girl reports to the parents and/ or police and you will be caught. Or, it will add to the very severe karma to be faced in the further births and hellish planets.
Therefore, the spiritual element, athma gets contaminated/ screened when it takes a body that develops material desires and attachment.
Therefore, ONE MUST BE SITUATED IN SELF, ie, ATHMA. IF IT IS INITIALLY DIFFICULT ONE SHOULD ATLEAST HEAR THE VOICE OF BUDDHI.
If not, you will invite problems from that girl and your image goes or you will take a miserable birth next time.
Senses are that much powerful. Therefore, you should consider all the living beings as ATHMA, not bodies. Do not develop attachments with bodies. These bodies are going to get contaminated just hours after death. Even the most beautiful body is going to become ONE into the soil. Therefore, the body is also a material object, because it is mortal/ temporary. Only the athma (we) is permanent.
Since the body is material all the other senses are also material. Athma is spiritual.
Therefore, all the desires can satisfy our body only, that is mortal. And, when we see the sense objects , we get attachments with them. When we do not get them, it leads to anger. Then follows consequences and the person commits offences / crimes because of his anger.
Therefore, if you like to avoid sense disturbances, you should consider yourself and others as athma and also surrender to the master of senses – Krishna, the Paramathma. When you surrender to Paramathma, the athma (you), remains blissful.
(II) FOLLOW DEVOTIONAL PRACTICES PROPERLY
If you SINCERELY follow the devotional practices like chanting Lord’s names, avoiding meat, onion and garlic that induce the senses more, offering daily worship, associating with the disciplined people and devotees, etc, your senses will come to control automatically because these rules are for cultivating/ purifying athma.
Offer food to Lord and then honour the same as Prasadam. Believe, the Lord is watching you all the time from within you and He is eager to see you reformed.
Krishna is the master of senses. Therefore, engage all your senses in the service of Lord Krishna.
Hear about Krishna.
Speak about Krishna.
Read about Krishna.
Smell and honour Krishna’s prasadam and flowers offered to Krishna.
Think of Krishna all the time.
Thus you can involve yourself in the service of Krishna. Thus, all your senses can be regulated and the persons will become dedicated devotees.
(III) TRY TO BE WITH A GROUP OF GOOD PEOPLE
Only if you remain alone, your senses will disturb you. That is why, the bachelors are advised to remain with family or good friends or in groups and should not remain alone. When you are alone, your mind is free to wander all over. If there is more good people in your association, there will be some other topics to discuss. Therefore, sense disturbances will not be there. So, the Bachelors should always approach the family members, friends and devotees. More family and devotee associations will always engage you in something. This will prevent the thoughts of violating.
(IV) REMAIN ENGAGED IN WORKS MOST OF THE TIME
And, ALWAYS REMAIN ENGAGED AND KEEP ALWAYS DOING SOME PRODUCTIVE WORKS. DON’T GIVE A GAP FOR THE SENSES TO INDUCE YOU (EXCEPT TO TAKE SOME REST AFTER GETTING TIRED WITH THE WORKS AND TO SLEEP AT NIGHT).
By doing so, you can easily control your senses by involving them in the service of Lord.
(V) SEE GOD IN EVERYONE AND EVERYTHING
When we see others as bodies, our senses will induce us. Every living being (athma) is the part and parcel of Krishna (Paramathma). When we involve in the illicit activities with a person, we are spoiling the consciousness and dignity of a person who is also the part and parcel of Lord.
Therefore, If we see others as the products / creations of Krishna and the parts and parcels of Krishna, will we dare to disturb them? This is true also. All are the parts of Krishna. Then, how can we disturb theem?
This realization along with the other measures will greatly help you to regulate your senses. All measures should be done simultaneously. That is important.
