LAPTOP Vs DESKTOP – WHICH IS BETTER IN ALL ASPECTS FOR HOME & BUSINESS?
Let us get a clear cut decision today, in this article.
Many of us are using desktop or laptop without knowing their merits and demerits. Many stick to a certain pattern habitually without thinking of any alternatives.
In this article, let us see LAPTOP Vs DESKTOP – WHICH IS BETTER IN ALL ASPECTS ?
(A) I SUGGEST USING A DESKTOP ONLY IN THE FOLLOWING TWO CASES
(1) IF YOU USE THROUGHOUT THE DAY WITHOUT MOBILITY:
Desktops can be considered IF YOU ARE USING THE SYSTEM THROUGHOUT THE DAY NON STOP. That is why, banks, financial institutions, stock brokers, Insurance companies, schools, colleges, etc, use only the desktops. They have to use for heavy busy usage throughout the day.
(2) IF YOU USE HEAVY PROGRAMS, GAMES, ETC WITHOUT MOBILITY:
Again, the desktops are the best suited in this case. Because, though you can use laptops for these purposes, in due course of time, you may face heating issues, blue screen of death, hardware issues, etc, if you use use laptops for using heavy programs frequently or for long periods of time. However, for occasional use of heavy programs you can use laptops itself.
(B) I SUGGEST USING A LAPTOP IF YOU FALL IN THE FOLLOWING CATEGORIES
(1) IF YOU USE A SYSTEM FOR MORE BROWSING INCLUDING INTERNET VIDEOS:
In this case, Laptop is the best choice because you can browse in any position, either sitting, sliding, on bed, etc. You need not strain your body by sitting in the same position for long time in desktop.
(2) IF YOU ARE ALLERGIC TO SO MANY CABLES/ WIRINGS, ETC:
Of course desktops need 3-4 cables such as connecting data cables, power cable, etc. With a laptop you need a single power cable for charging once or twice a day.
(3) IF YOU ARE SPACE CONSCIOUS:
Desktops occupy more space, say, almost three times of space than laptops. The laptops are handy and occupy no space. Better go for laptops for space saving.
(4) CONVENIENCE OF MOBILITY:
We are under the control of desktop and we have to go where it has been installed. Whereas, the laptop comes wherever we are. If you are not well, you can take it to the bed room. If you travel you can take it wherever you go. Therefore you lose no schedules, effective use of available time. Better go for laptops.
(5) FOR NORMAL USAGE:
If you are going to use the system for educational purposes such as programming, coding, web designing, reading through online, using any softwares, DTP, watching movies occassionally from the hard disk or through the storage devices, basic business operations such as tally/ other accounting softwares, design works, etc., at home or small office, you can use Laptop itself conveniently. At the same time, if you use the same above mentioned activities for long period everyday for commercial purposes, go for a desktop.
6) VERY IMPORTANT – COST EFFECTIVENESS:
When we speak about COST EFFECTIVENESS, we have to split it into THREE TYPES OF COSTS (I have used Indian Rupee for understanding purposes):
(i) BUYING COST OF LAPTOP AND DESKTOP:
In general laptops cost more than desktops by about 25%. If a desktop of a particular configuration costs Rs.20,000 a laptop of the same configuration costs around Rs.25,000.
Thus, you pay Rs.5000 more for laptop. Wait, this is not an issue because, we are going to save MORE THAN THIS in the usage of laptop. Read further.
(ii) COST OF SERVICE:
Of course, the cost of service for laptops is more than that for desktops by about 100%. If you spend Rs.1000 for the service for a desktop in a year, you may have to spend around Rs.2000 for a laptop.
Thus, in about five years, you may spend the cost of service as Rs.5000 for a desktop and Rs.10,000 for a laptop. Therefore, for a laptop, we may have to spend Rs.5000 more than that for a desktop in five years.
This is just for comparison and this does not mean the systems will give you service spending every year. I have never gone to a service person for one of my laptop for the past four years.
(i) + (ii) gives the approximate cost for a desktop FOR FIVE YEARS as:
For a desktop:
Purchase cost + service for five years = Rs.20,000 + Rs. 5000 = Total Rs.25,000 in five years.
For a Laptop:
Purchase cost + service for five years = Rs.25,000 + Rs. 10,000 = Total Rs.35,000 in five years.
The above calculation shows that in five years, we spend Rs.10,000 more for a laptop compared to the cost of a desktop.
Then, cost-wise, are the desktops cheaper?
Here, I have another calculation that proves that Laptops are actually cheaper than desktops.
Now, read the point-3.
(3) COST OF POWER CONSUMPTION:
Here, laptop saves money more than the above calculated extra cost for laptop.
Let us have a small calculation again:
(i) For a normal laptop, the power consumption will be 40-50 watts per hour. If you use it for about 8 hours a day you are consuming just 320 -400 watts . Let us have the average 360 watts a day.
For five years you consume 360 W x 30 (days) x 12 (months) x 5 (years)
This works out to 6,48,000 watts (or) 648 kw (Units).
If the cost for a unit of electricity is Rs.8 per unit, the cost of electricity for a laptop for 5 years will be around = Rs. 5184.
(ii) For a normal sized desktop the power consumption can be between 150-180 watts per hour (CPU = 100-130 watts + LED monitor = 50 watts). Let us have the average as 165 watts per hour for a desktop. For the usage of 8 hours a day you will consume 1320 watts per day.
For five years you consume 1320 W x 30 (days) x 12 (months) x 5 (years)
This works out to 23,76,000 watts (or) 2376 kw (Units).
If the cost for a unit of electricity is Rs.8 per unit, the cost of electricity for a desktop for 5 years will be around = Rs. 19,008.
You may spend Rs. (19,008 – 5184) = Rs.13,824 more for a desktop for power consumption for five years compared to a laptop.
Earlier, in the points 1 and 2, you had spent Rs.10,000 more for a laptop for laptop cost and service cost, compared to the desktop.
In the above calculation in the point-3, the Laptop saves you Rs.13,824 in power consumption for 5 years.
Now, the net savings in buying and using a laptop will be Rs. (13,824 – 10,000) = Rs.3824.
CONCLUSION: LAPTOP Vs DESKTOP – WHICH IS BETTER IN ALL ASPECTS ?
From all the above analysis, we can conclude that the cost of using a laptop is ACTUALLY LESS than that of a desktop.
Go for a desktop ONLY IF you use it for heavy use non stop throughout the day AND FOR COMPLICATED COMMERCIAL FUNCTIONS AS LISTED IN THE FIRST TWO POINTS.
In all the other considerations, ONLY A LAPTOP IS STRESS SAVING , COST SAVING, SPACE SAVING AND TIME SAVING DURING TRAVELS.
What is your vote? Comment below your observations in the usage.
If you use laptops for viewing videos, better use external USP DVD player for heavy use because, the inbuilt players are sensitive and cost more for replacement. Use them occasionally.
